Change of vehicle

Until further notice, Red Cross will be using a car to deliver the Perth service. The car is a white Toyota Corolla (1EAJ996) and will be marked with the Red Cross emblem on the doors.

Removal of Stirling Street stop

The Perth service will now only operate at 2 stops: Wellington Street at 6:30pm and Red Cross headquarters at 6:45pm. Effective from Monday 30 November the Patrol will no longer stop at 111 Stirling Street. Red Cross have advised Stirling Street clients of these changes and given information about the other stops and services where they can access food.

Hi Everyone,

In preparation for our forum next week, here is a copy of the Forum's terms of reference that we will be reviewing.

Northbridge will come alive to the sounds of the '50s and '60s for a free Seniors Week lunchtime concert featuring classic tunes from the era that gave birth to rock 'n' roll.

The Roots of Rock 'n' Roll Show at Northbridge Piazza on 12 November features the legendary musicians of Perth's own veteran rockers Way Back When.

The band will be joined by jive dance duos in dazzling fashions from era.

So get along to Northbridge Piazza, corner of Lake and James Street from noon to 1:15pm, to rock and bop to more than an hour of solid gold hits.

Seating and shaded areas will be provided, so mark it in your diary now.

The show is proudly presented by the Department of Local Government and Communities.

Seniors Week takes place from November 8-15, 2015. Almost 80 events will be held across WA thanks to State Government and Lotterywest grants of more than $80,000 to community organisations and local governments.

Alinta Energy, Horizon, Kleenheat, Synergy and the Water Corporation have agreed on the dates for the Christmas/New Year disconnection/restriction moratorium.

The dates will be from:

  • Friday 18th December 2015 to Monday 4th January 2016.

This means that the last day a customer can be disconnected/restricted in 2015 will be Thursday 17th December, with disconnection/restriction action recommencing on Monday 4th January.

Attached is a presentation given by Dr Professor Alan Duncan from the Bankwest Curtin Economics Centre to CEDA. His research utilises the latest available data to explore current levels of poverty and disadvantage within Australia. The report focuses on entrenched disadvantage, particularly the devastating ripple effect from housing cost pressures and health – two factors that nearly always go hand-in-hand with poverty and disadvantage.

The AlintaCARE Scheme will run two funding rounds over the next two months:

  • November 16th to 19th
  • December 7th to 10th
  • All agencies can submit 8 applications but please read the guidelines for all applications before submitting.
  • Large accounts over $600 may be considered for a higher grant, depending on the number of applications received.
  • Please ensure all accounts are open and that you have called Alinta to get an up to date balance.

Despite having no confirmation from Synergy as to the ongoing funding of the Power Assist Scheme, SVDP will be going ahead with the October funding round on 20th & 21st October. There are still some funds remaining, which will hopefully be sufficient to cover the October round.

This is an interesting report which focuses on the changes in living standards for Australians over the next ten years. Over the past 10 years living standards of the top 20 per cent grew by around 22.1 per cent while the bottom 20 per cent grew by just 13.8 per cent. The gains for the next ten years are expected to be significantly lower with gains of 5.6 per cent for couples with children and negligible growth for all other family types. For low income families the projections suggests a lowering in living standards by around 3 per cent.

Please note that the dates for the AlintaCare October funding round will be:

12/10/2015 to 15/10/2015.

Accessing HUGS

Recently there have had a number of queries in regard to agency workers and clients trying to access a HUGS grant through Synergy. I have contacted Synergy to clarify the situation and received the response below from Sarah Robinson. The yellow highlighting is my addition, to help clarify the process.

It is important to know how HUGS requests are processed by Synergy, to avoid confusion and frustration for the customer and for yourself. I do ask that you read this explanation carefully before contacting Synergy on behalf of a customer. If you are giving this information to a Synergy customer, please don’t give the Customer Support Team’s direct number. This is provided for the convenience of agency workers and those advocating on behalf of Synergy customers.

Synergy staff will be giving a presentation to the Emergency Relief Forum on 4th November. All are welcome.

Sara Robinson - Customer Support Manager, Synergy

When a customer first contact's Synergy to advise they are having difficulty in making payment of their Synergy account our contact centre will complete an initial assessment to see if the customer is eligible for an extended payment arrangement.. If the customer advises that they can meet the payment arrangement terms and conditions the payment arrangement will be established and HUGS will not be discussed.

In the instances that a customer is unable to agree to an extended payment arrangement and the customer has been assessed as experiencing financial hardship a request will be sent to Synergy's Customer Support team to contact the customer within 3 business days to complete a further assessment which would include the customers eligibility for a HUGS grant.

If a worker has a client in the office and wish to have the client assessed for a Hardship Utility Grant it is recommended that they contact Synergy's customer support office directly on 62122691 (this number is exclusively for agency staff and volunteers or financial counsellors, not for the general public. Customers should call into our contact centre on 13 13 53 at all times). In all instances Synergy is required to attempt to negotiate a payment arrangement prior to assessing the client for a HUGS grant.

When a worker contacts Synergy's Customer Support department the Customer Support officer will be required to ask questions regarding the customer's financial situation to ensure that they meet the HUGS criteria.

If a worker contacts the Synergy Contact Centre rather than contacting Customer Support Team, the Customer Service Representative will be unable to discuss the option of a HUGS grant.

N.B. A moratorium on disconnection begins at the point of the financial hardship assessment conducted by the contact centre.
